  1. I've read on several post the term Fish Mouthing, is this the same as a Horse's Xxx which is what I refer to the when the outside of the forging moves quicker then the centre, Horse's Xxx is a term used by all Industrial blacksmiths I have worked with.
  2. I mentioned Elmer Roush in another topic for my vote as a quality blacksmith, he is a all round smith in any field, making histrorical pieces/ tools is a speciality that he has perfected. Have a look at his web site and his dragon hammer nice work.
  3. I've attended two Elmer Roush classes, found his technique very pure, He is very good at reproducing histroical pieces, and has amazing hammer control. And he is a true gentlemen as well.
  4. Frosty its also been said I draw blacksmiths like a cowpad draws flys,
  5. Hello fellow smiths Greetings from sunny Australia, my name is Drewy and have been blacksmithing since 1984, first job out of high school. I served a four year apprenticeship in Sydney with New South Wales state rail authority as a industrial smith, Total of 10 apprentices in my year, they were one of the largest employers of blacksmiths for that era. I had my own bussiness for 15 years in my home town of Tamworth northern NSW doing all types of forge work from industrial, artist and general fabrication. 10 years ago I decided to go to university and train to become a high school industrial arts teacher. I work in a small rural ton 1/2 hr from home, lots of farm kids who love learning blacksmithing in my metal work classes. Look forward to interacting with others yours in Blacksmithing Drewy
  6. I spent years burning coal as a full time smith, nine years ago I went and had a chest x ray, resulting in a small black spot in one lung. Twelve months ago I had a second x ray of same area, concerned it might have grown, good news no change in eight years. Now I use gas should be no problem. So the message I'm sending is get checked by medical proffessionals, don't be like alot of men and think it will be ok.
  7. Rapid City is in South Dakota and is the host city for the Artist Blacksmiths assoc North America (ABANA) conferance which is held every two years. This year the venue is the school of mines (similar to a TAFE campus) and across the road at the state fair grounds. I went in 1996 when held at Alfred in up state New York. Fantasic experience hardly wait. regards Drewy
  8. Gidday fellow smiths is anyone heading to Rapid City for the ABANA conferance, would love to hear from any potentual partisipants. I will be there with my wife, boy is she in for a surprise, hope theres no shoe shops. Moony indicated he might go. Look forward to replies. regards Drewy
  9. Just returned from ironfeast 2012, really good weekend blacksmithing, meet some smiths from Melbourne Bruce and Ray, caught up with the usual groupies Moonie, Phil aka forgemaster, Colin Dray, and meet Steve and Tushia who are new on the blacksmithing circuit. All round the weekend was highly successful, plenty of sales, lots of knowledge shared over a beer or two, and plenty of good old fashion banter. Hardly wait for next year, although we do have the Bellingen show in May, with Colin Dray hosting the event. Cheers Drewy
  10. Andrew Thank you for the compliment, but in actual fact I'm no super hero and I can only be in one place at any given time. Yes I was in Lithgow last weekend, best blacksmithing event this year so far. The garage sale was the weekend before and the 75pd Joshua Wilkenson anvil didn't sell at $400, still for sale if anyone is interested. Glenn Moon told me about i forge iron last weekend, so I joined up tonight. Look forward to taking part in the cyber side of blacksmithing. Cheers Drewy
