  1. I'm in the middle of building the table. 4' by 8', 3/4" steel top surface sitting on 6 , 4" by 4" steel tube legs (1/4" walls) and a 4" (1/4" wall) angle iron frame. The two center legs will also have a 4" tube brace running across the underside of the table surface. The legs are all to be fitted with 6" steel casters (two with brakes). The underside will also have a 4" angle iron frame sitting near the bottom of the framework with ma braced expanded metal shelf. A vice will be fastened to one corner and a tool rack will be welded along one edge. The table will probably weigh in at about 1200 pounds and everything except the top surface will be painted stove blackl.

  3. I've done a bit of MIG welding, but am going to take a MIG welding class at a nearby community college. I want to build a table (4' x 8') to put in my blacksmith shop. I plan on putting rollers on the legs (4 or 6 legs?), and want to have a lower shelf (full sized) for storage, maybe something to hold tools along the end, maybe a leg vice, etc. For the top, I would like a heavy plate (how heavy, I don't know - up to 1"). Suggestions, please.

  4. I'm in the process of putting together my shop. I've converted part of my barn by pouring a concrete floor, wiring the space (110 and 220), and putting in ceiling lights. So far, I've got a coal forge (large one) with hood, a smaller coal forge, a gas forge (two burner), a treadle hammer, three welders (gas, arc, and MIG), various vices, an electric and an old drill press, swage blocks, a couple of grinders, an anvil, and a 25# Little Giant. The structure is wooden. I'm facing the inside of the shop with corrugated metal and have a question about insulation. I'm thinking about using some UltraTouch Denim Insulation behind the large coal forge (between the corrugated metal and the outer wall). The Ultra Touch is supposed to be very fire resistant. I will space the forge about thirty inches away from the wall (perhaps with another metal reflective panel about four inches away from the corrugated metal). Will this work? Does anyone out there have experience with this product?

I'm, also, going to have to run a pipe up through the ceiling ("smokestack"), and will probably do the same when I put in a wood stove. The problem is that the roof is old fiberglass panels (brittle). What is the best way to cut the holes?

I'm just a rank amateur at pounding hot metal!

    Thanks

  5. I just bought a 25# Little Giant (1939s era mfg.). I'm wondering about transport and its weight. Will it be best to transport the hammer in its vertical position? What are good tie points for my chain and webbing? I think loading it on my trailer will not be a problem. Fork lifts on both the pick up and my shop ends. Unloading should also be pretty straight forward. The problem is moving it around in my shop (roof too low to admit fork lift). How much does the hammer weigh? Can I move it around with roller pipe? Thanks
