  1. i ware gloves most of the time the cheap leather ones from hf get about 10 for $6 or so they are loose enough that they will just flip right off if i get any slag in them or if you get something to hot and the glove gets to hot. I hardly ever get slag in the glove but it happens some time. As for grabing a peice of metal that is black but still sears the flesh (admit it we have all done it atleast once) I would much reather be waring a glove when that happens. I get allot less blisters and burns when waring the gloves than without and thats even when im not doing something stupid.
  2. Racked up at the fleamarket today got a buffer, and 5 electric moters ranging from 1/2 to 2 hp and an exhost turn out and i got an old air tank that will be my welding forge (when i get around to building it)
  3. i forgot to log out of the chat room at work could i get some one to kick me out of there please will not let me log in from home.
  4. My wife let me get a ped for my birthday 8 years ago i wasnt shure about the double horn. I can tell you i have grown to love it a squar horn on the other end has come in handy a number of times. I have never regreted the purchase.
  5. looks good iv wanted to make some arrow heads iv just havent had a good excuse to make any
  6. When Hd opened up in my town they had grate to exceptional customer service and lows was the pits they had been the only super chain in our town and only other big hardware store was an independent that had about all you ever needed but they were a little pricey at time. Since then cant pinpoint the time but its switched now hd is the pits and lows has much better service.
  7. iv got 3 of the 11 hp and 12 hp and an 18 hp twin in undetermined condition i would guess all of those would need at least carbs rebuilt but thats not hard or expensive except the twin. Iv got a 15 hp sitting on a zero turn the motor i know was rebuilt and used less than a season before they wrecked one of the tranys in it. you can have that one for $25 but you got to haul the whole thing away cause i don't want it. the 15 is an ohv but don't think its an ic. the good thing about lawnmowers is about 9 times out of 10 the bolt patterns are dead on and you don't have to do any thing strange or crazy with switching out motors.
  8. i might have something im about 1.5 to 2 hours north of atlanta in belton sc if you are interested in traveling that fare let me know
  9. My first forge was a brake drum stuck in a flower pot holder. My second forge was a larger brake drum stuck in a metal tabel with the hole cut out for it to fit. The second one is my every day shop forge iv been using it for about 5 years it works good i get my metal just as hot and as fast as a comercial $200 to $300 at almost no cost but a little labor and some minor purchased items id say iv got less that $20 tied up in it. Would i buy a comercialy made fire pot? Shure i would if i can get one for about the same price i put into my curent one because i basicly dont need it. You have to ask yourself what is a fire pot? All it is is something to contain your fire in a consentrated area to keep a good hot fire and maintain it. Heck if it wasnt for my bad back id go real cheep and just dig a hole in ground and use that it was good enough way back when i bet it will still work good enough today. The fire pot doesnot make some one a good smith or a bad smith its what you do with the meatal after you pull it out.
  10. Iv already goten resevations in walking distance. I want get in till late friday so i will be going saturday and maby sunday morning befor i head back home.
  11. are those bolts or studs in bootem of that fire pot if there bolts i would take them out and find a pice of pipe the right size to fit the bottem of the fire pot and weld some bolts to the side and put nuts on form the fire pot side cut escess off the bolts. if there studs i would weld some ears on the side of the pipe and put nuts on the bottem side.
  12. As stated above a good tall chimney. Make shure you always finish the day with plenty of coke to start a fire the next time. Fire control and cooking off green coal slowley will cut down on most of your smoke. You still might get a few compants about the smell of coal burnign but unless there is some law or regulation aginst burning coal to heat with you should be fine. Most people will get over the smell and or any other problems once they find out what you are doing expecialy if you fix or make them something from time to time. If they dont get over it well more than likeley they would have found some other reason not to get along with you at some point.

  14. about 8 years ago my wife let me buy my first anvil and let me buy it new. I was using a chunk of steel for an anvil befor i got it. I have never regreted the purchase. i payed about $5 a lb for a 110lb ped. its still in grate shape and looks almost new (yes i do use it) at the current way prices are going i could sell it for any ware between 800 to 900 today based on new ped prices. you could say it was a better investment than the stock market. not that i ever plane on selling it i plane on using it till the day i die and hope one of my kids will want it and use it and not sell it off, but if it ever does get sold off i hope it goes to some one that will use it and apreceate it.
  15. Iv got an oprotunity to make some strap henges for one of the historic houses i have started demoing at. They have built a new building and they have receved some complants becuase the door and window shutter hardware was just normal hardware store items. So one of the board members aproched me last weekend and was asking about strap henges and door hardware. I have not made any strap henges but i understand the process and how to make them. my problem is figuring stock size for handeling the job is there a good rule of thumb for determinging how long and wide i would want to make the henges to one work properly and bare the weight of the door or shutter and be proportional to look nice. i have to go down there some time soon and get some meshurments to i can start figuring the amount of stock to do the job.
  16. i will be at Ashtabula Historic House this weekend in Pendleton this weekend for an encampment you are more than welcome to stop by and check it out ill be the guy with the forge going beating on hot metal. There are actualy a few smiths in this area about 6 or 7 that i can think of drop me an email or call me @8649343229 and i can put you in contact with a few other smiths in the area. if you want to come by ashtabula you can get the directions and such here Pendleton Historic Foundation, Historical Houses the encampment will be saturday 10 to 5 and sunday noon to about 4.
  17. Iv got a customer that has a MAZAK Laser and it will cut shapes out of pipe and at its lowest power setting it will ingrave (not cut all the way through) but considering the cost of the machine and the software for it i dont have 1,000,000 laying round to buy one. you can see a little bit about the machine they have here Laser Cutting Services now personaly after seeing what it cost to fix that thing when it brakes and only has a 6 month warrenty i would never own one of theres. dont get me wrong its a nice machine when its running but you could buy allot of plasma tables and all kinds of other toys for what that thing cost.

  22. if im seeing the pic right looks like you have a plate set in the forge that has a little bit of a dish shape to it. I would recommend redoing that plate and creating something in the center of it to make a deeper fire pot. the way i did it on one of mine is i just tooks some metal about 2 in wide and made a ring about 10 in or so diameter. set that down around your grate that would be placed right over the blast hole. Then i cut a thin piece of plate or thick sheet metal with a hole in the center it just sets on top of the ring. cut it just small enough to rest on the edges of the ring. It helps keep the hot spot in a nice manageable location. i will try to get some pics of it tonight so you can see what i mean.
  23. the firepot is in bad shape im planing on just making one for it iv got some stuff set aside to do that with and a few ideas running around in my head.
  24. i have started doing some demos for a local historic house and they asked me if i wanted this old metal blacksmithing thing behind there barn i told them heck yea.
