  1. Hello all, is there a 'for sale section' ? My health issues force me to sell all the shop equipment. Can someone direct me Dave
  2. WOW, I picked up the same style drill press, maker and all at an auction 3 weeks ago. Mine has a single sized pully on it, yours is steped. Mine has no motor mount on it, it was driven by the overhead pully shaft with a 2" belt. it's just heavy as you can't believe, must weigh 50lbs. Its so stiff and crunchy I'll be working on it for a long time. I've never seen one before so I had to get it. Yours is really nice looking I'd leave it in the living room :)
  3. Oh by the way, nice looking buddy you have in your sig.
  4. I'm remodleing an old chicken coop thats 17X14, it has 8' walls with open rafters, at the peek it must be 20' with a steep roof pitch. This building was built in the early 1900's so she leans a little but really sound . I have a large Bufflo forge with a super sucker box on it and 6" stove pipe going streight up 20", 4' past the peek of the roof. I have a 238 lb Peter Wright anvil one step from the forge, 3 post vices on the oppiset wall mounted in line so I can clamp a long piece in all at the same time if needed, and 2 post drills on the wall behind my work station. the anvil is in the center of the room pretty much. And I have a 8' door that slides sidways I configured with garage doorr tract and support casters for easy opening. with out the big door it would be too hot in there. I have a class 5 gravel floor so house keeping is no problem, no sweepe, LOL. I still want to put a overhead hoist trolly system in for the heavy stuff. But I think its great. I'm in Wisconsin so the winters get pretty chilly here, thinking about putting a small pot belly stove in somewhere. search for shop layouts and with the equipment you have you'll be able to see how much room u need. Cozzy is better, I'm old school, don't have electricty Dave.
  5. Isn't it great how ugly and crude they are. A properly sharpened bit will work wonderfull in that beauty.
  6. To bolster the interest you should attend a blacksmith class. I went to Turley Forge Blacksmithing School for his 3 week class back in 2010 and It's a life changing experiance. Frank is a phenomenel person and teacher. Blacksmithing is more than a trade that just makes stuff, it reaches in to the human need to create, to evolve from one's own thought or imagination, as a work of art or an invention.
  7. I have a 1/2 fine thread bolt with a flat ground for the set screw then you can put any chuck on it that takes that thread, buy the way do you want to sell the original chuck??? I'd be interested. Dave
  8. That Wisconsin comment is a hoot, I'm in Wisconsin and just picked up 2 at 2 different auctions, one a #1 Acne that has a top ratching dog and a smaller Buffalo Forge co. with a under the wheel ratching dog, Both are great after a little TLC. These are not works of art, most everything is cast even the gear teeth(gears) are cast. You will be real lucky if you find one with the original chuck, mine were missing their chucks. Good luck,

    cracked jaw

I had pondered reforge welding the jaw, thats how it was made anyways. But when it's that hot the jaw will distort with even the lightest blows, ya no like missing the nail and denting the woodwork, LOL. I was thinking of using my flating head and my 2lb hammer lightly on the first blow, just enouph to get the two metals to stick then reheat to complete the forgeweld. I'll have to teach my wife to be a striker, :(- Would wrought iron fileings mixed with borax sub for welding compound?

I have not welded wroght iron with a tig yet, I was going to try a test on the end of the post to see what happenes when I weld a 1/4: tab of cold rolled steel.

    cracked jaw

Thanks for the advise, I figured the jaw faces were forged welded with steel of that day. It is cracked all the way to the top on one end. I have a TIG welder and will open up the crack with a die grinder to get good penatration and refuse the faces. TIG will be better that Arc weld.

    cracked jaw

Howdy all, I bought a post vice with the letters V W & W H Co. incased within a long triangle with a date stamped below the triangle of 1894 and has 5" jaws with a weight stamp of 65 . Anyways I looked under the jaws and the movable leg jaw is cracked a 1/4" back from the jaw face that runs with the face for 3" long. Did they forge faces on the the jaws? How do I fix this so the whole face don't pop off? Sorry no pics yet.
