  1. Thanks for all the replies so far Gentlesmiths. You've definetly been a big help so far and I really appreciate it. Anymore suggestions are definetly welcome. Again thanks
  2. I have Alex Bealers book and The New Edge of The Anvil and yes I have checked out anvilfires book store. I'm looking for opinions on what has served people best and the ones they don't like as well before I purchase any. Because I know there are good books as well as bad and I really value your opinions, you folks have yet to steer me wrong again thanks
  3. Hey there all you Gentlesmiths; I have been asked to get some more blacksmithing books for the club I belong to. I was wondering what some of your choices would be. The criteria I was given to select books by was anything from beginner level to mastersmith level , as long as they deal with the craft of blacksmithing. thanks in advance for the information and guidance
  4. basket weave seat for the park bench that I've been working on for.......
  5. something I like to do as I take things apart is keep a running log of what I do and a description of the part as I go that really helps as for the flared end take a file or dremel tool with a good burr on it and take it off then do whatever you have to do. On mine the shaft that runs on comes out through the gear box(I think it's been alonng time since I had mine apart) Good luck and have fun Buck If opportunity doesn't knock build a door
  6. I like to look at all my wife's home decorating catologs and or just about any catalog she gets and I don't just look at whats being advertised but in the background too. Whan I see something that says make me I make a note about it or a quik sketch or tear out the page and add it to my scrapbook (just make sure she's done with the magezine before you start tearing it up). Oh! something else I forgot any womens magezine on the rack at the supermarket. Iwas watching csi last week and my wife said look at that mirror and sure enough another idea any way thats some of the things I do to come up with ideas I just wish that my skill level matched my idea levels but I'm getting there it just takes practice Buck "if opportunity doesn't Knock build a door"
  7. don't know for sure what I want just looking for ideas and thoughts about sizes shapes and depths. I've looked at the ones posted on the blueprints page and on some of the other websites and was wondering if there was a general on all that thanks again gentlesmiths Buck "if opportunity doesn't knock build a door" ps. I also know that I'm dissatisfied with what I've built and i'd like to try again Buck
  8. I'll have to go home and measure to be exact but aporoximatly(mispelled I know but know dictionary handy) 6" x 11" and 2 1/2" deep buck
  9. gentlesmiths; I'm trying to design a new coal forge because i'm not happy with the one I've already built. I was wondering what your thoughts are about size and shapes and depths of firepots. The one I have now is one that I got the sizes from off another site and it doesn't seem to keep the fire where I want it. any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated Buck "If opportunity doesn't knock build a door"
  10. could be from anywhere the gentleman I got it from works for a coal company in Gillete wy. but the price was right(free) and I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. 2 things I've noticed about it 1. doesn't coke up and 2. it burns forever without any help thanks Buck If opportunity doesn't knock build a door
  11. I just inherited about a 1000# of coal I was told that it was a low sulphur content and that it was rated at 9000 btu's not that I understand what exactly that means besides british thermal units, anyway I fired some up and it gets the steel a nice working color but I can't seem to get a welding tempature out of it. I guess my big ? is does it have enough btu's to do the job Buck If opportunity doesn't knock build a door

  20. Ireally didn't mean to put a fox in the hen house but I've only been smithing about 5 months and was asked to make a bench and i don't honestly know how to do some of the traditional methods of joinery I told the customer this and she was ok with me using a welder but I haven't felt comfortable with telling people that it was made by a blacksmith because I used a welder as well as my forge and a hammer so I thought I would ask everybodys opinion thanks Buck
  21. Gentlesmiths, What is everyones opinion on using a welder as well as traditional joinery in a functioning Blacksmith shop
  22. I love the new format for the blueprint page and I love this site i'm glad I found it.
