I have been a professional machinist for over 55 yrs, and if you are not careful it can be dangerous, but it is the best way to get a good finish because in essence it is always a light cut as far as the cutter is concerned. just look at the direction the cutter is turning and the direction of feed and you can quickly see that in climb milling the cut always ends as if it were a light cut - in conventional milling it always ends as a heavy cut. but if it does grab, you can break the cutter or pull the work out of the machine. if you know how, climbing is easy - if you are too new - avoid it

the best cutting oil I have used is a 50-50 mixture of pale oil and diesel fuel-and, it works on most materials!

my user name is nmgross - I have been a job shop machinist since 1949 ( I am retired now) I still feel the need to be around metal workers, so here I am. currently I have a fisher anvil of 100 lbs. and a good steel stand to keep it on! I find that many things can be done on an anvil faster than any other way. I have a lathe and milling machine at my home and still enjoy making things we need around our home. I always wanted to be part of a group such as this!

I sold my 172 lb. anvil for $500 - it was made of wrought steel - again, this one looks good!

I cant imagine that this anvil is made of cast iron , maybe cast steel? it seems to be in good condition!
