  1. hi my name is Joshua Mclaren i am 14 years old living in Ontario near toronto. I got interested in blacksmithing when i was 12 because of my interest in working with my hands and making somthing out of nothing. I viseted lang pioneer village on a school trip and the blacksmith shop was so amazing i was mezmoized by the way the steel moved under the hammer. I need to build a better tool collection but want to learn the basics first. i am i guess what you woul call a basic beginner. i have some books but i want to get the book "the art of blacksmithing" and "a blacksmithing primer" to get started i have "the new edge of the anvil" and "the complete modern blacksmith"
thanks for reading and any book suggestions or tips and tricks are very welcome
    Josh

  2. i think this thread is amazing an i see so many good points and i wish as a starting smith that it could be done like before, father passes it down to a son or a master smith passes down to apprentice, THAT is how it was meant to be, That is how it needs to be to keep things as they should be, you earn every last tool, peice of coal, peice of steel, every moment of experience, every grain of knowledge it CAN NOT be handed to you you must earn it

  3. I thought there was a guy in hamilton... some environmental co.. that you could buy some bulk smithing coal from... apparently the coal came from Pennsylvania .... but you had to buy a transport worth...somethin like 15 grand worth...
    - out east they buy from that fella... and i tried the coal, its very good quality for welding..

haven't used coal in a couple years... too many chisselers and middlemen with their fingers in the pot... every year it gets bump up in price...so i just switched to propane .... when i started..it was 22 bucks a 70lbs bag and now its up to almost 40... while propane is only 24 buck to fill a 30lb tank... have to watch the bucks nowadays

If you have a good price ...i know there be alot in southern ontario that be interested..
have you checked out the quality of the coal... just becareful not to get stoker

    take care
    Greg

i havnt used it, it was just a suggestion because i dont want to order 10 tons or whatever and end up with it sitting in my back yard
  4. i am starting to really get into blacksmithing (thanks in part to this site) and want to try to build a collection of tongs i have baught a few but want to make some so what size/shape of steel do you use to make bolt head tongs and are there any helpful tricks i should know about before i start and the first pair will be a double v bit to form a square like this <> for holding rr spikes
    thanks

  5. hi i baught this 186 lbs anvil a litle while ago and was told it was a peter wright but after seeing some other PWs i have my doubts my anvil dosnt seem to have the same ledge on the foot and a differant step the first 2 pictures are my anvil the other one is a comparisant of one a litle smaller

  6. Hey guys i got 200lbs of good metal scrap mostly 1/2" round and square mild but also 10' 1 1/4" square, some hardie tools, 10 pairs of tongs, a pair of antlers for knife handles an unlimited amout of leaf springs ans 100 peices of 1 1/2" diameter cable in 2' lengths, a 6" peice of railroad rail, and 500lbs of coal and 2 books, the new edge of the anvil, and the complete modern blacksmith

  7. For the sake of argument, let's assume the estimate of $1000 for a 186# usable condition name-brand anvil is accurate. This would make the 100# anvil worth about $540 IF it is name brand and in usable condition. Difference is $460.

Does an 80# bag of coke go for $60 where you live? If so, the deal is a fair deal. Not a great deal or a poor deal, but an equitable deal.

I think you would be wise to keep your Peter Wright. Just smile sagely and tell 'em you're not done with it yet. ;)

A tool that feels good to use has more than just monetary value.

i buy 50lb bags of coal for $10 so that would make the coke worth $15 (give or take) and for the sake of argument it saves tome so $20 and that is $40 differance but like you last line said, this anvil FEELS good to use and like iv said multiple times i want to liik at it when im 60 and say, wow and turn around and sell the 180 year old anvil for 2 grand :)

  8. I respectfully dissent.

Whether this is a good deal or not will depend on the quality of the 100 pound anvil. Does it have excellent rebound or is it "dead?" Is it in great shape or is it an ugly hunk of crap? And very very importantly: will you like working on the 100 pounder as much as you like working on your PW?

Have a look at this beauty: http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G8148-100-lb-Anvil/dp/B0000DD714

Also: Anvils are worth more in some areas and less in others. Did you get a smokin' deal on that Peter Wright? Here in the PNW it might be worth as much as $550. In Ohio it might only go for $200. What is the going rate in YOUR location?

well iv had 4 offers on it this has been the best and iv had 6 farrier / blacksmith vetrans that say they had $1000 saved for one and then settled for less and the guy that made this offer said it was worth $1000 i got it for $300 and i think im going to keep it because i want to look at it in when i am 60 and say, wow
i could always buy a smaller one if i needed it but id be hard pressed to find another PW in my area of this size, if anyone with a collection was to move to my area the'd be rich, i know 4 junior smiths looking with deep pockets that want to buy local

  9. Are you sure you actually have a Peter Wright there? There does not appear to be the "trademark" step on the feet. ( I use a 176 Lb PW at work and have a 278Lb'er at home). Perhaps it has markings that you can see "Wright" or part of it? If so it may be az Henry Wright(Peter's brother) and might be more valuable...
    Bear

it says on the side "peter wright patent" and it dose have the step this is just a bad picture

  10. I agree. Have an adult that is savy with electricity install a normal light dimmer switch in the power supply. They shouldn't cost more than $5. Just have someone that is knowledgable with sparky things do it. The fire is supposed to glow, not the blacksmith.:D

ya i was talking to my dad about making the air baffle and he suggested buying a reostat and we were looking at some on the computer and couldnt see the keys so i turned the light up and a litle light went off in my head, power supply is 110v dimmer switch hooks into a 110v outlet box and the blower runs on 110v and the dimmer switch is like an electrical air gate, so i baught all the parts and i got a dimmer switch that even has a push on and off... FANCY :P B)
  11. i am still learning and i dont demo, i am 14 and live with my parents so i will be here for another 4 years and i absolutley love my current anvil i cant decide but now i think im going to keep my anvil as it is the only Peter Wright of this weight i have ever seen and the man that offered me the deal was really exited and he is a pro farrier and has been doing this for 20 years and that tells me it is a good anvil so in short, im going to keep it

  12. I have a guy who wants my 186 lbs Peter Wright (pic below) for a 100lbs anvil (dont know the brand yet) a 80lbs bag of coke and $400, i payed $300 for my anvil and love it dose it sound like a good deal to u guys have only been forging for 4 months and have a small coal forge
    thanks
    Josh

  13. I'm doing my best to bring back vises to NM when I get a chance. If I have any cash left at the end of Q-S I used to buy a vise or two and take back with me to help pay for the trip. I'm a user not a collector, my favorite brand is "good using condition---cheap!"

That little 3"'r I picked up this year is *old*---set up for a tanged mounting bracket; but I still plan to clean it up and use it for a light demo kit.

Anvils: I have a Fisher, Trenton, a couple of Peter Wrights and an Arm and Hammer (not Vulcan!); oh yes also a Steve Parker! I don't discriminate between any of the good brands.

i dont discriminat either but my anvil ia a peter wright 185# so i would like to keep the brands the same (i dont know why) but i need a post vice badly, i have orders for rr spike knives with twisted handles that iv had to turn away because "it has to have the twist to be a real rrspike knife"(dont worry i refered them to this site and all you guys)
