  1. What would something like that clock or flower even sell for? Are they commissioned pieces?
  2. These tongs are for holding 1/4" stock and I set the jaws that way so I can pass the stock beyond the jaws and clamp closer to the heated end for more control. I really like the way they hold the small stock. While the handles look cool they are not the most comfortable in the world either. I'm new at blacksmithing so I suppose I've learned a good lesson about handle design. Smooth and simple is better.
  3. Thanks as a newbie that means a lot.
  4. Plant hanger I made as a gift for my Mother. It is brass brushed and beeswaxed.
  5. I was at BD two weeks ago and the fella there was telling me that they are the exclusive dealer of IK Hammers. So this changed pretty quickly I guess. I'd love to get one some day. Maybe a few side jobs and it will happen.
  6. Hmmm... I have a cousin in PA. Her dad and I might just be going to help her move into a house in the Fall. Maybe we can bring some back. Thanks for the tip Mr. Powers.
  7. Where can a person in central Virginia get sucker rod?
  8. Things went well. We let the kids make a necklace from a piece of 1/4" about 2 1/2" long. We drew out the end and then let them put a loop on the end and a twist in the middle. The staff then flattened out the other end and drilled a hole for a hemp necklace cord. The campers were thrilled and no one was burned or injured and there was only one close call when a 10 year old camper almost grabbed his work piece in the vise. Even with the leather gloves they were wearing that would have been a bad idea.
  9. Thanks a lot for the safety tips and the suggestions. The reversed shirt is excellent 100% cotton I suppose.
  10. Here, this should be a smaller image. I resized it with paintshop but did not click the "are you really sure you want to do this" button before I uploaded it.
  11. Made these for holding small stock like 1/4" square and round. Did a pineapple twist for the handles. I found a Brittish fellow on youtube demonstrating this twist so I thought I'd try it. Finished with a burned down beeswax candle my wife let me have.
  12. Thanks these are great ideas. I especially like the clay, and yes we have a $5,000,000 General Liability Policy. That being said we do not want to use it.
  13. Greetings smithy-types, I help teach a 2 hour class at a summer camp in NC called Pioneer and Heritage where we let the campers make corn bread in dutch ovens and churn their own butter, use two-man saws and draw knives to make stools and benches and such. We teach them the history of the old tools used to pioneer the country and this year we are adding blacksmithing. We have two anvils, a rivit forge, and a post vise. I have gathered about 20 feet of 1/4" square stock and my thoughts were to let them put the finishing touches on some wall hooks. Does anyone have any other ideas about what they could easily make in about 10 minutes? Our camp begins July 17th so any suggestions would be great.
  14. Yes he is. He has a great rating and my experience buying from him was one of the best I've had on Ebay. There are some really good folk on there but have you seen the Peter Wright anvil for $499 that has the whole back half missing? Is that person seerious?
  15. I emailed the guy last night through Ebay and now the price is $72. So typo is right good call. I hav a set of his hammer/ hawk drifts and so far they work great.
  16. Ebay anvil $7199 for 18# Is this a joke. This is nearly $400 per pound and it comes unfinished. What in the wide world of sports is that all about?
  17. I wouldn't dare show up with Budweiser = (BSO... Beer Shaped Object) Those folks might think I had no taste... if it is to be beer then Yuengling Black and Tan all the way. However whatever brand makes the coal available is fine with me. :D
  18. Ha ha, that's classic right there. So I should bring cold soda on a hot day or hot coffee on a cold one.
  19. When I was a kid some teenagers in our county had an old station wagon they would run over mailboxes with and sure enough one night they got ours. My dad heard from some guys at work what was going on so he went to the maintainance shop and bought a piece of small diamter railroad track and used it as the new mailbox post. About 6 weeks later we came home from a weekend at my grandparent's and someone had run the mailbox over again... only this time the post was bent a little and there was a front bumper in our side yard. Ha Ha.
  20. Thank you kind sir for your words of wisdom. I have a few moulding planes that are from the 18th century but to find a 193 pound chunk of iron that old is really neat!
  21. I found numbers on the other side of the anvil that look like 1 7 4 and then a 1 or 0 so I am not sure what that is all about. It can't be the weight due to the second number being greater than 3. So is that a date? Is that even possible?
  22. Ran the little rivet forge yesterday and began making the hinges for my new coal bin and some other stuff. I ran the forge for about 3 hours and ended up with two quarter-sized clinkers and a little clinker deposited on the tuyere. This Sewell seam coal is way better than the Pokey 6. I LOVE THIS COAL! In the Fall I am planning to go back and get some more.

Too cool! I love the woven bit.
  24. Thanks folks. I'll test them shortly. I made a pair of tongs out of the bent ones. It was darn hard to draw down at even a yellow heat.
