  1. Thanks for the info! Gonna have to go back there soon again I walked past both those places several times and didnt think they would hold any edge related items... Wrong I was. Ohwell, if I would have gone to those places too my girlfriend would probably have killed me anyways. Bless her patiant heart for keeping up with her little blacksmithing manchild in the streets of London. ^^ Next time I´ll scan the whole city to its bare bones! It would be wonderfull to actually get a real look/touch of some of those artifacts thank you again for the heads up. My hats of to you (is thats how one says it? O.o)
  2. My pleasure! Just tell me if you need a HR version of some. (seeing the details better and stuff).
  3. Hello all! Im now back from a weeks visit in London and have taken a good amount of pictures for you! (allmost all the blade artifacts from the British museum and a bit from the Science museum!) feel free to go and check them out at my Picasa album: London Pictarue! Im by no stretch of the imagination any good at fotography and the lighting is a bit of a challange in some exebitions, but atleast it should be vieweable. If you have any interrest of a bigger picture give me a tell and I can send you a bigger picture. (Picassa didnt want to make my pictures big =() At the end of the album there are a few mineralized treestumps too. Just for fun! Hope you like it! (I'm not sure where to put this thread. Im sorry if its in the wrong one and apriciate it if its redirected to its propper thread)
  4. Probably Mo... I guess since Mu doesn´t exist
  5. I mainly use three types of steel not counting the normal iron bars. Its "20 steel": C 1,0 - Si 0,30 - Mu 0,45 - P max0,015 S max0,015 - Cr 0,15 and "15 steel": C 0,75 - Si 0,30 - Mu 0,73 - P max 0,020 S max 0,020 And the "15/20 nickle steel" C 0,75 - Si 0,30 - Mu 0,40 - P max 0,020 - S max 0,01 Ni 2,00
  6. I knew I would get it for not fixing it before i took the picture. I was right in a repair on the underside of the stump so had the lady unfastened. Normally I have her nailed down to the stump thingy with a U nail on every foot. But will probably buy her a neckless soon so she'll be quieter :P
  7. I see this post can go the wrong way very quickly ^^ But yes eye-protection or no happy time...
  8. yea found the seller to have pictures of peddinghaus anvils instead of the ones he actually sells. I assume its cause he hasnt updated the pictures since he is very honest and a good man. Ohwell, its good quality and doesnt get the notches easily exept for the odd hammer missing while drawing out a billet...
  9. Greatings Good people of the forums this is The love of my life and a real competetor to my girlfriend: GERTRUD! Gertrud (What? Its totaly normal to call your anvil by a girls name!) I got her for a combined christmas/birthday present from my familie. Its 50kg which is about 110 pounds. Yes yes its not the biggest but it works superb! Just wanted to show of my beauty and hope you like it :P
  10. Thank you for the compliments! The steel is i think based on Norwegian clasification cause the carbon steel i normally use are called "20" (1%carbon) and "15" (0.8% carbon) and the nicklesteel i use in the patternwelding is called "15/20" so... yea... Its highcarbon steel with nicklesteel added into the mix? xD The one with the deep etch and random pattern I made with a old lamination (iron and steel) scrap which I had laying around, I thought that it was a bit of a waste so I wacked it out, twisted it and used the twisted lamination in a lamination... if that makes sense.
  11. Not everyone can come from Norway... I mean we are only 5 mill people... xD Thank you. I will try my darndest to remember to take pictures of my little children! (Is it weird to call ones knives for children? O_ô)
  12. Thank you thank you. Im from the south of Norway (Jæren in Rogaland) but have studied up in Trondheim for a year now. Actually writing this from Trondheim now Thats a far spread btw. Brønnøysund is half way to Bodø!
  13. Hehe thank you. Well except for making my nerve systems totaly ignore burns and giving my fingers skin of a Spartan I agree xD
  14. Lali ho everyone! My name is Jens Michael Strassegger and I've been smithing as a hobby, I would call it more of an obsession, but whatever its called Im smithing blades and *** love it! =D My start to this journey was when I was in my last year at school. I´ve been blessed with going to a School where we had one class which we could choose ourselves, what we were going to study. (Wait did that make sense?) Its kinda like a year long exam thingy... My thoughts went at once to the practical side of the scale and as soon as I found out that one of my teachers was a master Bladesmith tought in Sweden my path was lain. Anyways I have learnt a great deal already from lurking around on this forum and hope to be able to contribute in due time. I have a few pictures laying around of my forge and some of my work (posted pictures of my latest knives in the knife thread) and will try my darndest to fill up this server as time passes Thank you for your attention and good luck from Norway! -Jens Strassegger
  15. Hello there dear smithers! My name is Jens Michael Strassegger. I´ve been lurking around on this forum for a while without realy doing anything except a small comment here and there. Anyways, my addiction or whatever you choose to call it started 3 years ago and I havent been able to lay down my hammer since. (Its a bugger when its time to scratch that itch on the head) Anyways I'll save the rest for the introduction thread. Here are some of my latest blades. (made in the last... 3 weeks) Hope you like it. Feel free to check out my deviantart user where I have posted other pictures aswell! Deviantart Page Best wished from Norway -Strassegger
  16. About the soaking in vinegar. Is it table vinegar (7% ish) or essence 35%? Found out that the essence, when warmed up/boiling is a pretty agressive and effective acid. It takes longer than the other ones ofc, but still. I've atleast gotten a pretty good pattern showing with mild steel and an 5160 steel. Well... for both beeing very light in color its not much, but still! Love boiling things, its so much more efficiant :D
  17. A few years ago I was addicted to a videogame called World of Warcraft. Its a online game where you play in real time with other people over the net. Anyways. I got so into it that my family had to take a serious talk with me about it (to quit ofc.) Now, after 5 years, I saw myself in the same situation again. But instead of getting fatter and drinking soda I have become more muscely (typo?) and getting burns. The fun thing about this is that my family, I have my smith at home, started to have the same conversation with me about my smithing habits. This came up after I was home on vacation for a week and had litteraly been in the smith every waking hour of the day, and evening, except for dinner! Now personally I think thats not too bad since I live far away normally and have to use the time that I have at home for smithing, you all understand right? . ... so You might be addicted to Blacksmithing if you... Have to have an intervention just so you take a break from that xxxx patternweld that you "just had to fold one more time!" :P
  18. Thanks for the replies! Ill be trying to hunt down some shade 3 glasses. Seems tough most standard are 5 and up. But many thanks again! I apriciate (typo?) it alot. =)
  19. Hello there! I live in Norway and have a hard time finding protection glasses/goggles which protect against IR. It seems that there only exsist for UV. Anyone know of a place where its possible to buy theese, near Norway or in Norway Takk! Jens Strassegger
  20. thanks for the reply. It is that easy ay... Sweet Cant wait to get to the smithy now ^^
  21. Hello there! Ive been bladesmithing for å little while now (about 3 years on and off, mostly off since im a student and my forge is on the other side of the country ) I started forging knives as a selftaught class thingy in schoo and was lucky enough that my woodworking teacher was a educated bladesmith from Sweden. Anyways, I made my own damascus after about 3 months of smithing and have been making as many laminated and damascus variations I could think of sins then, starting to turn out pretty good allmost every time now (brag ) but I was wondering; How does one make the "birdseye" pattern? Is it drilling half holes similar to ladder pattern or punching? If someone has any other "toturial" of diferent patterns I would be much interrested in reading them too. Thanks you for your time. Jens from Norway.
  22. Hello there! I have a question about using galvanized (normal?) plumbing pieces for a breakdrum forge. Its realy hard to find someone here who sells anything that issnt galvanized, so i thought maybe i should just soak the pieces in vinegar or something to remove it... Would this work or is there more in the metal that comes out after repeated heating? I hope my question is understandable. Thanks you and a great big hug from the cold land of Norway =)
  23. I got worms... oh and a cat once + the ocational bird flying into the window. But mostly worms The coast of SouthWest Norway realy doesn´t have many different animals ^^ + Im glad we dont have any dangoures poisonous animals or reptilians here. Im getting all icky reading about black widows and scorpions.
