  1. fosdick was known for precision jig bore machines , hold a tenth all day long {.0001} probally still does , thats the way that old iron was . nice shop , does he have a lot of contracts ? does your stomach have butterflies in it when you visit, do you get a headache thinking of all the tools you could make for blacksmithing or other projects
  2. key keeper , they are beautiful your friend is quite a craftsman or artist whichever you prefer
  3. hey piglet, they sound like workable ideas to me let me know how you make out i am not that far from elkton maybe i could ride my scooter down and see what you are doing sometime
  4. all right ,THANKS SLOB. i can work this in my job i have to do made a hand bender this weekend and i had no idea a piece of conduit was so hard to bend i need a 5 foot pipe as leverage looks like a very nice tool i can rapidly bang out some parts my client has assuerd me of other needs for this type of operation also so i am going forward thanks again, and THANKYOU GLENN for this site chuck
  5. help me please i have a production bending job and i have no experience with this typ of operation i have a 48 inch piece of 1/2 emt conduit i need to bend at the middle 180 degrees with a 4.5 inch radius but it must be robust i need to make about 200 pieces for the first run and hopefully many afterward will one of those hossfeld machines you guys talk about work for this i can make dies i am a machinist thanks chuck
  6. first i knew tgis was going to be a good post, thanks archie second who is your teacher daryl chuck
  7. piglet i prefer machining the threads on , probaly because i am a machinist, second gives it a better look i think and a ship linkinge is a great project al you really have to worry about is length and anythink in between is up to you , i seen a piece of bar stock with a split down the center, i seen a round bar with a simulated ball connection thruout , pretty cool like those ball chains you used to see on light fixtures. many options . a rope twist in stainless would look pretty cool i think
  8. Glenn , you are a regular human encyclopedia of knowledege or you spend a lot of time reading bathroom material , which is it just having some fun you know that
  9. hey Glenn you know what brings back memories to me , my first real street bike was a triumph 500 hardtail chopper , boy did that machine require a lot of wrenchtime . hey Larry, i like your yamaha looks very comforatble for over the road riding and of course it is black , whatother color would a blacksmith have lol
  10. hey Kevan , i love pounding the iron also , probally just as much or even more than riding , real dangerous on the road , or my age is making me consious of that , plus my bones hurt after about 4 hours on the road i guess i am becoming an old geexer and as far as who rides what , i think that may be too sensitive of a subject on this forum . i love that forging , you never know what will come out of the naamans forge . it is like a primal urge take care kevan
  11. find out who said that, i knew this was going to be an excellant subject i love this kind of philosophy
  12. kevan , my only comment is harleys are very theropeutic at least to me anyway and many others i suppose , to me it is an art form the way the lines run and the slow idle i know there are better enginered cycles and more efficient and cheaper i would be a fool if i did not recognize this . but to me harley is where my heart is . not unlike an anvil , many prefer haybuddens peter wrights and the like becuase of signature rings . some prefer fisher anvils becuase of non existant ring chuck
  13. hey fat pete was it worth the money i would like to get one someday
  14. hey piglet , what are you planning on for shift linkage i made forward controls for a superglide i used to have it was easy , just keep in mind keep the linkage as parrallel as possible to prevent binding do not rely to heavy on the ball joints for alignment correction they bind if they are to close to thier extremes chuck
  15. are opinions a form of art ?, i know a lot of people say and think of very profound and curious things. and then there are the craftman such as george will that is a word smith uses the english dictionary to its fullest potential
  16. this is a great subject!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my interpertation is a craftsman follows blueprints and instructions with a great deal of detail and integrity. and artist adds flair to projects such as an added scroll or a painted flower on the side essentially the artist lends nothing to add any practical value to the product but we all know how a well placed twist or turn or a well selected color scheme can add to any project. my opinoin only that and $1.09 and tax depends on where you live will buy a cup of coffee. as an added note , i always thought snap on tools were desighned by artist/ engineers for there pratical sense there ergernomics and in my eyes they are beautiful. chuck
  17. i am truly sorry for posting about my harley's baffles , i just wanted to share how i solved a problem with my motor vehicle with forge, anvil and hammer i had no idea i would have offended anyone with this subject. i understand motorcycles are not for everyone and please accept my apology for any arrogance i have shown thankyou , chuck
  18. they are cycle shak tapered duels on a 2001 night train they have passed every preceding year , Delaware is just getting stricter {probably federal money at the bottom of this } and yes Larry i did try to justify it by saying loud pipes save lives the motor vehicle dept has no sense of safety here i am providing a public service by having a warning device on my motorcycle via exhaust velocity and they don't recognize the overall benefits. after all tractor trailers have back up alarms don't they and they are considered safety Larry , it is just plain ridiculous
  19. delaware is testing motorcycles now for loudness my harley davidson failed , failed twice don't know why my pipes are just tapered duels not drag pipes it is a harley for crying out loud i went home fired up the forge fabricated come baffles using thin wall pipe making an hour glass shape with horn squeezed them in opening and went thru inspection then and it passed i wish after it passed i could have throttled it up and blew my homeade baffles in to the inspection area , but no i made them fit too well , and now i have to pry them out. on the bright side i will save them for 2010 when the bike is due again the moral blacksmithing will solve just about any problem .
  20. chevrolet///////////////////////
  21. yes that is what i did, i machined the bottom paralel to top then flipped over and skimmed the minumum off the face , and it was out of paralel WAY OUT about .234 machining and measuring i am pretty good at but blacksmithing i SUCK but i am very attracted to the science and art of it
  22. i measuerd the swayback to be about .045 to .125 near the edge i took down about .075 {a little over a 1/16} it did not harm the integrity of the steel one bit and it was fun to do
  23. you know you are a machinist and you insist that your 170 pound mousehole is flat within .oo1 thousands of an inch and the surface finish is borderline chrome . the things i do with my time to amuse myself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
