nts Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 here ya go, you even can catch a glimpse of the pitiful piece of metal i call an anvil Quote
Max Mulholland - Tetnum Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 thats a great forge and the anvil i see nothing wrong Quote
pamike Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 is that a tie plate you are using for an anvil? I can get literally tons of them, I'll have to pick a few up to use till I can get a "real" anvil. Quote
Flaming S Forge Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Nice creative setup. It looks like you are about ready to fire up the forge and start hammering metal. Have fun. Quote
nts Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 i've used it a bit, but i've made upgrades Quote
nts Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 it is rail tie, it works ok, but i need to find a better base for it, has a bit too much bounce Quote
pamike Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 maybe you could get a piece of log about waist high and some railroad spikes and sike the tie plate into the log, that should eliminate the "bounce". then after you get a "real" anvil you could cut it down enough to keep the face of the anvil waist high. Well at least that is what I would do. Quote
P. Bedard Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 My first forge was made from an old hot water tank and my first anvil was a chunk of something that fell off a Bulldozer that I found on the side of the road. Work with them, enjoy them. The experience will only make you a better smith. Quote
nts Posted January 30, 2009 Author Posted January 30, 2009 my original set up was a salvaged one, the scalloped bricks on the bottom were from our old flower bed, the rotors are from our repair shop, the fan is from the shop's old furnace, and the fire bricks are from a friend who's parents are sculptors. the only thing that cost me money was the plumbing, which set me off about $50 dollars. so i got lucky with the salvaging. kasaino Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I like it! my first forge... if it can be called that... was basically a fire pit with a bag of charcoal dumped in it, and a shop vac blowing on the coals... I really wanted to work on knives ok!? lol Quote
nts Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 lol that works, my friend runs his off a shop vac in reverse and it works awesome. Quote
