is that a tie plate you are using for an anvil? I can get literally tons of them, I'll have to pick a few up to use till I can get a "real" anvil.

maybe you could get a piece of log about waist high and some railroad spikes and sike the tie plate into the log, that should eliminate the "bounce". then after you get a "real" anvil you could cut it down enough to keep the face of the anvil waist high. Well at least that is what I would do.

My first forge was made from an old hot water tank and my first anvil was a chunk of something that fell off a Bulldozer that I found on the side of the road.
Work with them, enjoy them. The experience will only make you a better smith.

my original set up was a salvaged one, the scalloped bricks on the bottom were from our old flower bed, the rotors are from our repair shop, the fan is from the shop's old furnace, and the fire bricks are from a friend who's parents are sculptors. the only thing that cost me money was the plumbing, which set me off about $50 dollars. so i got lucky with the salvaging.

I like it! my first forge... if it can be called that... was basically a fire pit with a bag of charcoal dumped in it, and a shop vac blowing on the coals... I really wanted to work on knives ok!? lol
