September 23, 2025Sep 23 Hey I hope you all can help me, I am searching for an article about making tools without having tools (or very limited). I cant remember where I saw it but can remember the first tools that was made there. It was a bar with hotcut on one side and a round punch on the other. Thanks for your help
September 25, 2025Sep 25 I'm not positive but I think I have seen the article in one of the ABANA Hammer Blow's magazine from way back. Might check their website. "Make a tool to make a tool". I can’t control the wind. All I can do is adjust my sails. ~Semper Paratus~
September 25, 2025Sep 25 Good Morning Jo, If you start with a little longer material, you don't NEED Tongs. You can cool your work piece with a watering can, to hold it. Do you have a Hammer or do you need to Tie a Rock to a Stick? I have Forged many a time, with a Camp Fire of Wood, it is just slower to Heat. Neil
September 25, 2025Sep 25 Forget articles about how to make multi use tools, any tool made to do two things does neither well. If you don't want to go to pawn shops, yard sales and make your own. Find an old coil spring from a wrecked vehicle, junk yard, etc. cut a length and forge a chisel on one end and grind the far (struck) end to a SLIGHT dome shape. If you're using it to cut hot steel you don't need to harden it. If you need a punch forge a piece close to the diameter you want and hot file it smooth and round. The end should be flat, same dome on the struck end. Do NOT try punching holes with a center punch, they do NOT work worth spit. Frosty The Lucky.
