September 12, 200817 yr Those places have to buy the stuff at new prices and may not be too willing to sell at scrap price. Some of my friends have been buying steel from a building demolition company that has the steel "free" and expects to get only scrap for it. Also if you ask for a specific size it generally means it will have to be cut and that costs---ask instead for a big hunk of steel and don't get hung up on exact size and shape.
