Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Getting back to the leg vise, were you able to free up the screw? Once it is turning you can take it all the way out and then remove the screw box from the fixed leg. That way it is easy to give it a good cleaning and check the threads. ThomasPowers
The best tools for vise unfreezing are time and penetrating oil! I've seen a number of machinist vises broken by folks wanting to force things rather than wait. I'm working on a vise right now, I removed the screw and have been soaking the sleeve junction with penetrating oil for weeks, Using a friend's hydraulic press we got the jaws to separate by about and inch with 5 tons of pressure---more soaking! Postvise: the most delicate and hardest/most expensive to replace is the screw/screw box. So if it has nice square threads it is in good shape. As for mounting plates I like using the Champion U-bolt and angle iron version. The spring does NOT need to be spring steel or heat treated for that mater. When I forge one from coil spring I just normalize. When I use flat stock it's usually mild.
