acoop101
If you can find it Two Part Marine Epoxy works really well, it creates a hard clear coating and only needs to be applied once. It's really toxic though so use it in a well ventalated area.:)
Rich Hale
Gun blue or browning is a good finish for carbon steel work. Anything you apply will wear off sooner or later. Brownells sells a paint that you apply and bake on. I have not tried it but was told it works well. The most durable finish I have ever found is to obtain as smooth a finish by hand. I like a mirror finish, then keep it clean and oiled. If you gave us more as tio what you are looking to do with a finish it may help. EdCaffreyMS
Your likely not going to find any coating that can be used on steel, self applied, that will hold up for use on an eating utensil. The ideal route to take is to make the items out of a quality stainless steel. If these items are for use outside your immediate family, I would also think that the liability is going to be scary high with any coating. Its not going to stay on, and its only going to take someone getting sick or chipping/breaking a tooth from biting down on a chunk of the coating that has come off to ruin you. It's sad, but with the way the world is today, you gotta think about covering yourself and don't do anything that will get yourself in trouble. coltpax
The only coating i put on my knives is remoil. I polish them with the buffer, then spray them with remoil. when you go to use it as a eating utensil, clean it up and you'll be fine. hammerhandsyd
coltpax wad you mean by cleaning it up?, clean it like scrubing it or wash it?
coltpax
just wash it. it should be fine to use as an eating utensil after you was it. Or, If your gonna store it in a dry place, you wont even have to do that. Just make sure you clean and dry it after use. As long as it stays dry while not in use, it should be fine.
