Rail track thermite welding metal: Can it be forged/does it hold an edge?!

Recommended Posts

Great video about forge welding RR Track steel hardening and tempering. The title is slightly misleading though, I thought it was about Thremite welding.

Well worth watching especially if one has some RR Track to play with. I made a pair of power hammer dies from it but never dreamed it could be forged into cutting tools or forge welded into bars etc.

I just had my first run in with forging RR track over the weekend. It's some seriously tough stuff to break down with a hand hammer. Sparks like ~0.7% carbon so without watching the video I am going to assume yes, it will hold an edge.

My plan is to use it make hammers. I had a real thin section ~(2" thick). Which i cut the head off and forged into 2 blanks. I reiterate, it's some tough stuff.
