Janoy
Hi there, I am planning on making an axe mandrel and an anvil horn. Available steel is either 4140 or 45Si7 which is some kind of spring steel. It's basically a medium carbon steel with 1,5-2% of Sillicium and 0,5-0,8% Mn. I've made some scrolling tongs from it and it's a fine steel for that purpose. It appears to be less tough than 1070 or 4140 when used in punches. If anyone knows a good supplier of 5160 in europe....
Frosty
Welcome aboard Janoy, glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header someone in your area might speak up. Saying you're in Europe is just too vague, about like saying I'm in the western hemisphere. In general though, wear resistance is pretty useless for an anvil's working surface. You aren't going to rub the work on it are you? Frosty The Lucky.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Hi Janoy, good to see you post. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help with getting the best out of the forum. I think 4140 would work just fine for what you want.
