As a newbie I'm thinking the best thing that can be done is to read the forum a bit, and then get with some local Blacksmiths or your local/state Blacksmith association. Get with real folks somewhere close to your area and learn a bit. Then you can have a better idea about what you need from a skills standpoint. I can't say enough about getting with the local guys.
