Cannon Cocker
I recently inherited my great grandfather's forge. It says clay before using in what I'll call the "fuel storage area". I've read all the threads on here that I could find about claying the forge. What I haven't been able to figure out is do I clay just the flat pan surface where it says to clay before using? Do I clay the firepot only? Or do I clay the entire thing? Thank you in advance for your advice! BIGGUNDOCTOR
Mine has not been clayed since we got it back in the 70's. It also sits outside and rain can get in under the clay and rot it out.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
The problem with not claying a cast iron forge pan is the risk of cracking. I would clay the entire pan up to the fire pot but not the fire pot making it a ducks nest. About a half inch of clay should do it.
Cannon Cocker
Okay, so I do not clay the fire pot, but I do clay the whole pan. Got it.
