October 27, 20187 yr Making a hawk- heat treat and tempering rages? Can't find one of the scrap lists that has metal types- tired of looking and searching. Thanks Dave
October 29, 20187 yr Probably a medium carbon steel. Check sparks against other steels. What do you want to use it for? Throwing hawks will be softer than hatchet used hawks. Generally if I don't know the alloy I'll try warm vegetable oil, remove any decarb layer and check if it's hard enough for my taste. If not go to something like a quick oil, Parks 50 say, or even a brine. The faster the quench the greater the likelihood of catastrophic failure.
