JIW597
I've built a spring helve type hammer but my 1hp motor keeps tripping it's thermal breaker no matter how heavy or light my tup is. Not sure what I'm doing wrong maybe something in linkage
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
The motor is overloaded, probably need at least a 2hp or larger. BTW: Welcome to the forum. If you will edit your profile to show your location you may be surprised how many members are near you and a lot of questions are location dependent. Krush
I cant tell how heavy the ram is but doesnt look heavy enough to need more than the 1 hp I had a 60 pounder that ran fine with a 3/4 hp motor. if its the spring harmonics speed or spring stiffness needs to be looked at. Definitely increasing hp would stop the thermal trips but wont address the underlying issue if harmonics are an issue.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Could also be pulley ratio with too large of a pulley on the motor.
Michael Cochran
Did you use plans to build this hammer or did you just guess based on pictures? If you used plans did you follow them as closely as possible?
JIW597
I used no plans just built from pictures and a video on YouTube . university of YouTube lol
JIW597
I'd say the ram is around 40lbs But it was tripping the thermal when it was only 15 to 20 lbs
Krush
its not the ram weight, did it run steadily if you push the foot treadle just enough to get it to run a little slower?
