Hello all. I'm looking to know is it possible to quench in vegetable oil and or frying oil . Have the availability of both just don't know if any good and wouldn't use unless it was.  Thanks Gareth.

Absolutely. Smells a lot better than motor oil. Keep it covered when not in use- it will attract varmints.

Yes, and yes.  The purpose of a quench medium is to remove heat from the steel quickly.  Different alloys need different quenchants to get the most out of steel.  Heated vegetable or frying oil should work fine for any alloy for which an oil quench is suitable.

Almost time to get some free slightly used peanut oil after thanksgiving here in the states. Tho, using it to quench makes me hungry for some reason. :)
