Rick_sanchez
I am trying to make some pieces for my uncle so he can weld them to some jackhammer bits to drive T posts. So I was wondering what is the best metal for him to weld together but also something thats not going to shatter when he uses them.
ThomasPowers
will this be used by hand or powered? How thick will the parts be and what will they look like? How good a welder is your uncle and what type of welding equipment does he have? In general I would sugfgest A-36 and be sure a proper preheat and post slow cool is done on the jackhammer bits. They usually are 1050 steel and so not very fussy to work with.
Rick_sanchez
Powered, .5 in walls, looks like a cup with a hole in the bottom center. He has a stick welder, so so welder.
ThomasPowers
What will be doing the hitting then? High powered needs a more professional set up than low powered. Typical alloys for heat treated tooling are the medium carbon ones like 4140. If you are following the discussion of using hydraulically driven a concrete breaker bit else where on this site it looks to be an S series steel.
