Don't get in a hurry

Featured Replies

I just wanted to remind all the new guys and anyone else that need reminding, there's no need to get in a hurry when making a knife. I'm glad that the only bad that came from my hurry was the tip breaking off because it could've easily been worse. As a result of being in a hurry I'll either have to redo the profile or start over. This blade started as a piece of Aldo's 1084 over 6 months ago and I'd work a little on it here and there when I just needed an excuse to go to the shop for a little bit. It was rough forged and then many hours of filing to get the shape and bevels right. I finally got around to doing a heat treatment a couple weeks ago and started the handle. The handle material I have isn't all that exotic or special so I tried to make it a little snazzy using a 'frame' made from black walnut and the 'scales' on this is wood I found laying around and it kind of makes me think of elm but at the same time I kind of doubt its elm. I was going to do a stacked bolster with copper and whatever else I found that would look good (I haven't thought that far ahead yet).

Anyway, I got in a hurry trying to fit the blade side piece of bolster material when I did what I never should've done. I had the tang in the vise jaws with room around it using the vise to support the copper and put a piece of oak on the tip of the blade and tapped it twice with a small piece of scrap steel when I felt an odd shift. I almost cried when I saw the tip was missing.IMG_0248.JPGIMG_0250.JPGIMG_0249.JPGIMG_0252.JPGIMG_0251.JPG :(

Suggest that you forge a deep cut on the end of the spine. And you could sharpen it. It would then be useful for back cuts as well as slicing.

I'm not sure what you're trying to tell me. I'm thinking about moving the whole clip point back far enough to keep the same kind of shape. It'll be about 5/16" shorter than intended but I think it'll be ok. If not it'll be another decorative items sitting around the shop reminding me of stupid mistakes.
