treytheknifeguy
i was making a knife for a mate of mine and saw a drill bit in me scrap box and thought if i just use that it will be too brittle then the idea popped in my head if i run mig welds on the outside of the steel it could potentially keep it from being too brittle but keep its high edge retention so i tried it then forged it into a blade and it seems to work pretty well has anyone else tried this i was unable to find anything else on doing this
ThomasPowers
I knew a fellow who used to forge using tig to heat the piece when he started... Most drill bits I use are HSS High Speed Steel and so very hard to heat treat properly and a pain to forge as well. Migging a softer steel envelope for it is just a modification of san mai. cf
