March 26, 201610 yr Hammers, hardies, drifts, stakes, punches are all good uses for 4140. It will not harden hard enough for a good knife and is not good for thin cutting tools but is a good steel for many blacksmith tools. I use 4140 or 4340 for most of the tools I use under the power hammer. $.50/lb is a good price. I am paying $1cdn to $1.20/lb buying 1/2 a ton to a ton at a time.
March 26, 201610 yr Author That is what I was thinking. Said that stick had been there since he bought the shop 16 years ago. He also said he has some others there that he will give a good deal on to because they have been there longer than that piece.
March 27, 201610 yr 4140 is a good tough steel. 1.625" would make some dandy ball peen hammers. Do you have a power hammer to work with, or are you hand hammering?
