March 16, 201610 yr Hi my dad picked up this old leg vise, I know figuring out a maker is hard to narrow down, and there isn't any markings, but the bronze bell is different from what I've seen, it looks old English, any guesses on the age?
March 16, 201610 yr Author Ok thank you, I was guessing early to mid 1800's too, I wasn't sure if the bronze Bell was a tip off. I've said it before but I'll say it again, the English made a stylish vise.
March 16, 201610 yr Remembering that the screw and screwbox may not be original to the vise; I've traded a couple myself to get a working vise from several scrap ones.. The issue is that dating so early we don't have a lot of info like old ads touting the virtue of a brass screwbox that would help put a manufacturer to it and perhaps a date. (I have also seen a brass screwbox that was a repair piece.)
