assistance with patina

Featured Replies

Hello, ..........would like to patina to a semi gloss "half black".........not total black but more of a satin tinted black. To be applied to forged and wire wheeled mild steel. If you have seen black chrome, it is similar but with a smooth satin finish. My hopes are to apply whichever technique and rub again to remove and shine up the high points. Tried a black wax but wasnt darkening the shiny areas that mill scale was completely removed.......maybe someone has done it here, so i figured i'd ask. Thank you

Try sanding and polishing to a 400 grit finish then slowly heat up through the tempering colors till you see the color you like and quench just enough to stop any more heat transfering.

If you dont like the color you can sand and try again. Not extremely durable but with a coat of wax it isnt too bad.

You might also look into different finishes for firearms.

Most chemical patinas will not work the same  when applied to steel and scale as they are different chemically.  So you need to make it all the same or use a cover coat that carries the colour.

Sculpt nouveau makes a nice solution called black magic.  Any patina you use will react much better if you sandblast or soak in vinegar for awhile.
