Blackclaw83
So I have an old smoker like the one in the photo. I am wondering if it would work as either a coal or propane forge. Since this is my 1st build I thought it smart to ask this forum.
ThomasPowers
Yes; since a hole in the ground will make a forge it's not hard thing to do. Now will it be a better forge than a different one; probably not as the size and shape is not particularly great for that smoker.
Blackclaw83
What do you mean by size and shape?
ThomasPowers
The long section is way too long for most general forging---(a sword forge needs a hot spot of around 6" long for instance) adding a lot of fill in is expensive or heavy or both. The short section is too big around for most forges. Get off the net and go visit some smiths and see what actually works; stop by my place I have both coal and propane forges at both my locations! Blackclaw83
Good info thank you. That's why I came to you all to ask my questions
ThomasPowers
So lets start with what you want to use it for: ? What skills/tools do you have or have access too: ? (If you can't weld suggesting you use a design that takes lots of welding is not much help). What materials do you have access too/can scrounge: ? Then we can discuss what would be a good way for you to build a forge.
