Hey guys, I'm a newby to the world of smithing.  I've taken a couple classes at an SCA event, have a coal forge, anvil, stump and some hammers (cross peen, several sizes of ball peen)  I've got some scrap metal me and some friends have collected and have done a couple projects (S-hook, fireplace poker, small broom handle)  Always looking for any advice to newbies and curious if there's anyone else in St. Louis, MO who might be up for teaching or practicing together.  Here's what I've done so far between classes and on my own.  Always like feedback.

Welcome aboard Fuzzy, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the gang live within visiting distance.

While liking feedback is a great straight line I'll have to leave it lay for now I don't even like to think about me and cucumbers. <shudder>

On a seriouser note, work heavy to light, finish the thick sections first they can stand going back in the fire more times than the thin sections. EG. Measure ad twist the shank first, then draw the points and make the finials. Bending the hooks can be done at low temp low red is plenty. That way you won't burn the ends off the hooks.

Just don't forge tapers and points that cold, even mild steel will break at black heat. Yeah, that was too cool.

Frosty The Lucky.
