I Forge Iron

Trenton Oddity (Question)

Recommended Posts

Hello!

New guy here, just finally got my setup going after moving to a space that would allow it!  I found my anvil last week and have been inspecting it trying to date it etc. and some of the numbers seems odd.  It has the trenton diamond on the side but the serial either has an odd digit or is spaced strangely.  With and without the 5 its either from 1899 or 1905, but it just seems odd since the space doesn't look like a missing/damaged digit.  It's got a great ring and bounces a ball bearing like it cares nothing for physics so it know its nice regardless, I'm just curious if anyone had seen anything like it.

Thanks!

Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the IFI gang live within visiting distance.

That's a fine looking old lady you have there. Is she bolted to the stand? You're going to want to build a more rigid stand, while that one is okay, it wasn't built for serious forging. The most important thing about stands is getting the anvil mounted at the correct height for you. Figure about wrist height give or take a bit.

Yes, I have a Trenton though not in such fine shape it's still a heck of an anvil. Bouncing a bearing nearly as high as the drop point IS physics and an excellent indicator.
