stan
Bought this pair of tongs years ago and they are very useful they will hold stock at any point along the length, going to make a set ,what is their correct name?
Eddie Mullins
I don't know but I like them. I have seen similar where the jaws were either perpendicular (for punches) or parallel to the reins but those look to be at a 20 - 30 degree angle, interesting design. I may have to give it a try. Frosty
They have a proper name I can't think of. I do know what they're for though, they're for holding round stock in this case that's too long to hold be the end like wolf jaw tongs do. Side grip or side bit tongs keeps popping into my dented head so maybe? Not to be confused with cross bit tongs that are intended to hold a piece, perpendicular to the tongs. The ones pictured hold it maybe in the middle but parallel with the tongs.Frosty The Lucky.

stan
Found a reference in Practical blacksmithing and metalworking second edition by Percy W. Blandford as to the tongs. They are bent-bit or side tongs. So you were close Frosty.Made these out of 3\4 by 3\8 to hold 1\2 inch square or round stock. carlson
Did you make them straight then bend the bit? Maybe with a piece of the target stock in the bit?
