Rohn
Hey guys, I'm currently restoring this vintage 16lb. sledge. It's got a Made in USA stamp on it, a "16" stamp on it, and this maker's mark which I've made a mock-up of to help get a better visual. If anyone has any insight as to the maker, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!
njanvilman
I believe that is made by Atha, a company later bought out by Stanley. I think they made them in the Newark, NJ area.
kubiack
I have a few Atha sledges and they are very good hammers. I like the older pattern hammers better than what is made today. There something of a collectors market of Atha hammers so it might be worth more to sell than to use.
Michael
Got a full picture of the sledge? Those old school sledges with the octogonal stock and fullers around the peen are aesthetically much nicer than modern cast sledges.
Rohn
Thanks for the replies guys. Atha does seem to fit, being that under the marker's mark it has the name but is too crudded up to read but could make out AT_ _. I will have some full pictures later tonight after I'm finished cleaning up the faces. Once again, thanks everyone, it's really exciting to hear that people recommend its quality. Michael
I've a few Atha tongs and hardys from garage sales and they are excellent tools
Frank Turley
I've abstracted some of the information from the "Directory of American Toolmakers" Editor, Robert E. Nelson; Early American Industries Association; 1999. ATHA TOOL COMPANY. The company was incorporated in 1891 by Benjamin Atha and may have been established as early as 1875. From 1884 through 1898, they bought out several companies. They were themselves bought by the Stanley Rule & Level Company in 1913, but Stanley retained their "A" in a horseshoe trademark until present times. They were especially noted for farrier tools but also made mining tools. There is some question as to whether Atha was formerly the Newark Steel Works. Rohn
Thanks Frank, I also read that information this morning after seeing the replies as to what the company was. As for photos of the full sledge, here they are. I've don't most of the restoring that I want to do but the handle is still raw, I shaped it out of ash that I had as I've got no hickory.
