propane problems

Featured Replies

Afternoon Gents- My forge has not been as productive as usual, and I believed it to be the weather change. Its cooled down to only about mid 50s, and my tank is freezing up VERY rapidly. I thought it may have been the tank sitting on the concrete floor so I elevated it with wood- same problem. Then I kept it in a basin with warm water- same problem. The only way I can get it to produce enough heat is to shake the gas and it will run heat for about 5 mins and then back down.Any problem solvers have any answers for me?

what size tank and how big ore the burners

I'm guessing you have a 20lb. tank (BBQ size).
You can get a manifold and link 2 tanks together to eliminate the freezing, or get one of the 80 or 100lb tanks from Lowe's or Home Depot.
Larry Zoeller has the manifold kits for $15.

Dropping the tank in a bucket of warm water works too. You can also wrap it in an electric blanket.
With some of the larger jet engines I've built, I have to do this even in the middle of summer.

The little BBQ tanks just can't vaporize fast enough for some forges - I had the same problem, which is why I went over to a couple of 25 gallon tanks.

My forge will freeze my 100# bottle when it starts to get low, just get a slack tub larger than your bottle and fill with water. We do this trick at horseshoeing competitions works great.

Just a note, dont use warm water, just use normal temp water. If you put a full tank in warm water youc an cause too much expansion if the water is warmer than the air temp was when the tank was filled, and cause the overflow valve to start venting propane at you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll attempt what works best.

an easy not so sloppy way is to get one of those clip on lights and put a hundred watt bulb in it and shine it on the tank

Best solution I have heard is bigger tank. My 100# tank frosts up only when it gets very low. Never freezes and stops running, at least so far.

hmm... My tank is BIG reaches up until my shoulders don't know how many LB's but still freezes up.I always keep a buket of water close to the forge flames so i have hot water 2 pour over the Tank.2 burners 0.6mm nozzel each
