JimCrawford
Does anyone know, offhand, what steel these are typically made from? -Jim
ThomasPowers
They range; do a spark test on each one you want to use and compare it to known values. (File and car coil spring are two I generally have handy) I've had some that would air harden when forged into knives---a bit of a surprise when you go to file on one that was "normalized" after forging... I pick them up at the fleamarket for tooling "scrap" and sometimes knives---the ones with the most bursty sparks go in the knife scrap pile. I teach a lot of new folks and would prefer they make their learning mistakes on cheap tool steel rather then the low Mn 1084 I have been hoarding...
