Jamie Bacon
I have a friend that is willing to fix me up a plate steel table to drop a rotor/forge pot in. I'm hoping for about 30" deep by 60" long with the fire pot on the left. I was considering him having him cut a hole in the right side for a quench tub. Would it be ok to use a galvanized bucket to drop in there or would there be enough heat that it would put off fumes? Any other ideas? Or is it just a bad idea to eat up valuable table space with a built in quench tub? Thanks for any help. Jamie Bacon
Rainbows
The liquid inside should disperse enough heat that quenching stuff won't vaporize the zinc (but the galvanized bucket I use is more of a barrel size so might not be accurate). However if it is too near the fire then it might be heated from there and start causing problems but I don't have any experience in whether that could be a realistic danger. If you can get a stainless steel bucket it would have a longer life and have fewer dangers compared to galvanized.
ThomasPowers
Well Jamie it sort of depends on what you want to do. If you want to work high carbon steels like knives and many tools then having a quench tub right there would be about a good idea as storing your good china in the same area. Usually the only water in my shop is in my coal bucket and in my drinking glass/bottle No problem with galvanized the water will keep it below trouble temp if you have it fairly full
arftist
No, you don't want your quench tub built into your forge. You need the space for coal, stock and tools, plus you are then limited to whatever size you build in.
Jamie Bacon
All the convincing I need! Thanks a lot for the input everyone. I'll design accordingly.
