njanvilman
Its a great way to begin. I am sure that as you use it, you will think of modifications to improve its functionality. Don't forget ear plugs or muffs when hammering. Preserve you hearing for your later years.
jmccustomknives
I did something similar, used it for years. That large forging surface comes in handy.
Frosty
Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the IFI gang live within visiting distance. I've been a proponent of this configuration for rail anvils for a long time. I've never made one with the top piece so much longer than the bottom ones. I cut the rail so the bottom two are longer than the top one by the length of the horn I want. I usually made both the same length but one is good. I offset the two bottom ones so the rail stuck out beyond the face plate and cut and ground it into a horn. The one sticking out the other end I made into a square horn. The web and flanged have to be trimmed so you can wrap around the horns of course. Doing it that way leave an area on each end where the face plate (other wise known as the flange) next to the horns extends into open air a bit but is backed by the rail under it. I REALLY like this kind of rail anvil, it's really EASY to have a 12" long 100+lb anvil, makes a great portable. A 200lb anvil is easy to come by this way. Frosty The Lucky.
