Wrought Iron for Gun Barrels

Featured Replies

Most impressive.  Well done.

Yes, every barrel Ive seen done was done with a butt weld.

Colonial Williamsburg has a video of them making a complete muzzleloader including making the barrel from flat material, nicely done and a picture is truly worth a 1000 words.  Nice 4" or more tire material would come off an OX Cart Wheel, I've seen them up to 8" or so.  I've sure they are available at most Used Ox Cart Dealers.

The two pieces of wrought I purchased online allegedly came from a 19th century silo in the upper Midwest. I would sure think there would be some lengths approaching Jim's preferred dimension out there somewhere. What a great project. And Mick, good gosh, man, that's a beautiful pattern you acheived!

The Gunsmith of Williamsburg is the video to watch regarding this subject!!

Youtube 'colonial gunsmith' and youll find a few videos that have survived the copywright barriage.

Wallace Gusler is an amazing individual..
