My understanding is that the regular bernzomatic plumber's style propane torches will not work. Would the mapp gas torch like the below one work? A bernzomatic should get you into the low yellow anyway if you use light brick, maybe a bit more if you use a kiln brick. More heat easier with mapp though of course.
