First screwdrivers

Recommended Posts

I haven't treated a screwdriver since high school metal shop nearly 50 years ago but I still have the screwdriver I made and it has worked well. Standard harden and temper to dark straw was the method we were taught. I have tempered a fair bit of stuff since then - I use our kitchen oven as it is accurate all the way up to the max temp of 250ºC.

I can't say as to what is the proper temper, some what softer than a knife blade, but not much. Worked over 10 years as an automotive mechanic, and a soft screwdriver will strip more screw heads than you can shake a stick at. I find that high quality tips for electric drivers will snap of clean like a knife tip.

I got bored waiting between heats on a project and decided to go ahead and try some screw drivers. Are there any special ways of heat treating the screwdriversattachicon.gif

Kinda depends on what you made them of.
