territorialmillworks
Finishing kmg grinder clone with 3.5 hp DC treadmill motor. Have to wait a couple weeks for the controller. But I really want to run the grinder to check for allignment and direction of rotation. The motor is rated for 130 volts. Can I hook up a car battery for a no load test run. And yes, I'm out side of my knowledge base as to DVD motors lol. Thx. Keith
Broomhead
I used a car battery charger to test out a DC motor from an electric lawnmower and it worked just fine.
timgunn1962
You should be fine on the lower voltage. The car battery should give the current needed (the rating is likely to be a bit of a lottery, but working on 3.5 HP being 2625W, 2625W/130V gives 20.2 Amps as a ballpark figure). That's a fairly high current for a charger, so the battery is probably the safest bet unless you have a charger rated for high current. Speed varies with Voltage, so will be low: about 10% of the rated speed at the 12-point-something Volts a car battery will give. Should be fine for checking tracking and alignment. Steve Sells
dont forget a motors start up current can be up to 140% of normal running usage.
Dale M.
Doubt a 12 volt battery is going to spin up the 130 volt DC motor..... Its just not enough volts to properly energizer coils in motor....If it does, its going to be pretty feeble.... Dale
