Der_Hannes Posted January 27, 2013 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Hi! that´s my cute baby. It´s a 78Kg /172lb Anvil with very clean edges. I know that the anvil was forged 1918. But i have no idea what shop did it. The anvil has a nice story, it was my former Boss´s first tool and he started his whole career with it (in best days there were 18 employees) When i did my apprenticeship as metal engineer it was a bit burried in the workshop and i dug it out and started my hobby. My Boss quit work because of age. The Workshop led by his son now moved to another location. I had about 98 hours overtime so i asked him if it´s okay if i get his anvil and his forge for it. So the anvil is mine now! I like the size pretty much for small jobs, like making tongs, chisels and other tools. And the shape is in a perfect condition. Sound is nice too... no cracks or else. The square hole is 20mm/0,78" and i built some tools for it last weeks. I have another anvil too, a 173KG/381lb South german form, but it is still in a workshop because it´s a bit too heavy for my car ( which is also permanently full with rusted tools and parts). The anvil that you have is kind of a rarity, which is not seen often. It is a Southern German anvil, but with a tail instead of a square horn. This can easily be recognized, as its face is narrow and a characteristic horn which (mostly) only appears on the Southern German anvils. Also, it misses a slope on the side and the hardy hole is on the wrong side for a Bohemian anvil. All signs show it's a Southern German pattern with a tail instead of a square horn. And with that, a few other details. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic looking anvil. If you could post some pictures of the side(s) where the trade mark is, I am sure I can tell you what brand it is. Coming from south germany the anvils i have seen are quite all the same form. Square Horn, swage foot and lateral fore-anvil and two holes. Sometimes the fore-anvil is missing but still the same form. Mhm.... South German rare Anvil seems like great success too. I will take further Pictures when i´m in the Workshop next time. I did some cleaning yesterday. 3 hours later the face was in a condition i can work with. Time and many students left many scars on that one but there are still good edges. The Crack isn´t so bad at all. It´s a cast anvil wtih welded face so the chance to break a horn is quite small. The anvil was build in 1954 by Sichelschmidt und Schlasse The before Picture After some cleaning and Detail of Manufacture Sorry for bad picture quality, photos were taken in workshop with few light source. I could use one just like each of these and maybe one more anvil from any region with church windows and a 5th foot. You cleaned that anvil up nicely. The edges are not too bad. Der_Hannes Posted February 7, 2013 Author Share Posted February 7, 2013 The Anvil wasn´t used by me so far. Still placed in a friends workshop i had no oppurtunity to forge. I´ve only got a ford fiesta and the trunk isn´t really made for a heavy babe like this. So i cleaned it and still wait till i get green light for a fitting car to get it to my workshop. Der_Hannes Posted February 24, 2013 Author Share Posted February 24, 2013 Hi again! Yesterday i was lucky to get some time for smithing. I took a wirebrush and removed alot of dirt and paint to get a nice shot of the anvils' manufacture. Interessting: Facts i was told weren't right. It's a "Söding und Halbach" Anvil, built 1925 and weights just 71,5 KG instead of 78KG Stamp in the middle says " Vergiss mein nicht" ("Forget-me-not" ) with the flower itself.
