Stormcrow
This one is a bit of a shift in direction from what I've been doing and is a direction I will be pursuing more. This is my first knife using flared stainless tube rivets on the handle. This is a solid chunk of steel, heavier than I typically make. I wanted to build something that would be able to take on just about anything that could be expected of it in the hands of a military member in a high-stress situation. The steel was 1/4" x 2" wide 5160, given my typical triple normalization, triple hardening, triple tempering heat treatment. The spine stays approximately 1/4" thick, tapering distally to the tip. The handle is black canvas Micarta with epoxy and stainless steel flared tube rivets. There are hidden lightening holes underneath the Micarta. Flared tube rivets are old hat to a lot of knifemakers, but it's the first time I've done it and I'm quite happy with it. Very solid and would break your hand before it comes off. The edge shaves hair nicely, and with the weight it has would bite deeply. I haven't measured it yet, but it weighs a bit over 14 ounces. The sheath is black Kydex with two MOLLE locks. This and a couple of other items will be going to someone who will be taking better pictures of them, and then eventually more folks can see them. :D
Perrin Aybarra
Stormcrow, I've seen a few of your knives and let me just say, I think they are fantastic. Your work always amazes me and serves as inspiration for me, a beginner.
Aden Cassidy
great knife, just a question but how do you triple harden. Thought you could only do it once ? I double or triple temper my knives as well to.
Stormcrow
Thank y'all! Got the measurements on this puppy: 7 1/2" blade including the choil, 12" overall, 1/4" spine at the blade/tang transition. Perrin - I've drawn inspiration from so many talented makers, I'm glad to pass some of that inspiration along. :) Aden - I talk about it here: http://helmforge.blogspot.com/2012/05/why-i-build-what-i-build-way-i-build-it.html
iamzeus
I'm actually making something similar for myself to use in the military lol Can't wait for basic training in october :D Also working on my first friction folder. Hopefully i'll have em both finished before then.
kevin1050
Don't take that knife to Basic because it will be taken away from you. Safe it for when you get to your unit and put it on your gear. Plus I bet you will have people that want one too...
iamzeus
Yeah i know, i wasn't going to bring it to basic. Useless anyways. I just want to finish it before basic because i won't be able to work my forge for a long while. I'll most likely make some for other people than to really used it since i'm going in as a communications tech. But hey, never know when you can be sent to a danger zone. Better to have something you don't need than not having it when you need it :D
