You are going to need to anneal it before working it. That involves heating it to a non magnetic state and allowing it to cool slowly. Search the site or google it for more information and techniques.

Don't take that knife to Basic because it will be taken away from you. Safe it for when you get to your unit and put it on your gear. Plus I bet you will have people that want one too...

Veggie oil is safe for the enviro. Plus it can be recyled into biodiesel afterwards.

After forge work or grinding I use a Nettie Pot and rinse out the sinuses. Oh my god you will surprised on what comes out. Once you get past the feeling of squirting salt water up your nose you will be surprised on how you feel afterwards. You can get them at Rite Aid, Walgreens, Wal-Mart etc... You can get the salt packages there as well. Plus you might notice a difference with your allergies. I did.

Purple Heart wood can darken up in color if exposed to sunlight. 'The trees are prized for their beautiful heartwood which, when cut, quickly turns from a dark brown to a rich purple color. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light darkens the wood to a brown color with a slight hue of the original purple. This effect can be minimized with a finish containing a UV inhibitor.'

Throwing knifes are usually tempered quite soft. If they are to hard they will break or crack upon impact. Getting into the purple range should do OK. I am sure someone with more experience will chime it too. I do my tempering in a small toaster oven and check the colors as I go along. I step up the temps and usually do 2 hours each at the lower temps and nice long overnight soak at the final temp and let it cool down in the oven before taking it out. As Rich stated normalize before heat treating and tempering to prevent issues when quenching during the hear treat.

Looks good! Just be aware that purple heart will react to UV rays from sunshine. You can use marine varnish to help protect the wood if you want. Or any other finish that has UV protection in it. Think of it as sunscreen for wood.
