Black Frog
Looking more at little giants. Wondering if there is a preference between the old style or new style hammers?
SoCal Dave
There are differences between the old style and new. Contact Sid at Little Giant and he can guide you. Calling is best. I have an old style. I think what is available locally and which is in the best condition would be my preference now. It also will depend on the size i.e. 25, 50 or 100 lb hammer. Good luck. KYBOY
We also have an old style but it was what was available..I will say that Ive heard several exp'd hammer owners say that they prefer the old style hammers..I dont own a new style so I cant say to be honest. My exp with the new styles is limited.. The guides are different, then the transition style and new style have a removable sow block. A few other differences as well.. The only thing i have against the new styles is that I dont personally care for the hollow sow blocks.I wouldent let that stop me from buying one though.. Black Frog
I've found Sid's video on the differences: But wondering if some owners here can share pulses or minuses of one style or the other. *edit, thanks KYBOY, beat me before I hit the submit button.... Black Frog
Well, once AGAIN I gotta keep of CL. I saw this one pop up, and knew I would kick myself if I let it pass by. I guess this old girl has a new home now, I believe this is the 'transitional model' from all I've read....
HWooldridge
I had a rear clutch/flywheel design and liked it because everything was easy to get at for adjustments or disassembly. However, the center clutch designs work just fine so it's likely a case of whatever you can get your hands on will be the right choice. I also had wooden clutch blocks and liked those better than the fiber material (again, easier to work with and adjust - at least for me). BTW, that's a very nice hammer - looks to be in good shape. monstermetal
The best hammer is the one you can hit metal with...., The old style hammers I think hit a bit harder, I think the new style is easer to adjust and maintain. I wouldn't get hung up too much on the style, I'd buy the best condition at the best price and ignore its particular vintage.. Much better to have a soild machine that's not the style you like than a worn out junker that's the one you think is the better model....
