8 Layer Damascus Skinner

Featured Replies

Well I did it again :D

4 layers of 1095&15n20 welded, folded, and welded.

Drew out the billet and hammered in the blade shape.

Quenched and tempered,

hand done hollow ground (Paiinnnnn)

Etched the blade in Radioshack furic acid.

Used a nice Bolo braided leather cord & Epoxy for the grip :D

I really need to learn to sharpen though :( I can't sharpen to save my life.

The shape and color of it in the last pic makes me think of an obsidian blade, very cool.

I like the shape. It looks useful and portable. I think a higher finish before the etch may show off the metal better.

What materials are you currently using to sharpen? What method of sharpening are you using?

Thank you! I sort of wanted to do a very low layer count blade. I've seen a whole lot of high layer count blades and I actually prefer the low layer count patterns.

Wet sand paper on a piece of polished stone tile is an inexpensive system that can fill in your gaps in your honing kit.

If you would like some thoughts and or suggestions send me a privat e note

Looks very nice. I would suggest getting some sand paper and cleaning up those grind lines on the knife, the pattern will look better that way :)

I love the look of low later counts as well. I do have to ask though how did you upload those pics. I'd love to post some of my knives can't get them uploaded? Any insight! Cheers and nice work there!

@ Loneforge, If you use the actual reply button instead of the fast reply, at the bottom will be an uploader thing. I've tried the advanced uploader a hundred times to no avail but if you use the simple uploader, 1 picture at a time it's fairly easy.

Just upload all the pics then on the right side it should say something like add to post next to each picture name. Just click somewhere in the post like you're going to type, then click add to post and it'll add it.

I like the knife, however I believe if you are taking the time to make damscus you should go ahead and take the time to sand the blade. If you take it to around 600g before etching it will have a much cleaner look and the pattern will really stand out. Just my opinion though. Justin
