KAlexander Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I was in a blacksmiths shop the other day looking to buy my first anvil. He had about 10 anvils for sale of all different sizes and manufactures. One great looking anvil he had in the corner of his shop was what he called a Black Prince. It looked brand new only with about 10 to 20 years of dust on it. Can anyone tell me about these anvils? Thanks you. Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I, personally, have never heard of that brand. But that don't mean much. I could find nothing in Anvils In America, with a quick run thru. But when I Googled it, this is all that I came up with.http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/1368696http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-anvil-black-prince-90-lbs-wrought It says that it was sold thru Shapleigh Hardware in St Louis, Mo Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Never heard of one but that doesn't mean much. Anyway check it out for ring, welded repairs and such. If it doesn't ring true don't buy it and if it shows a lot of welded repairs pass on it. Some guys get anvils and weld up all the chips and such along the egdes and grind them smooth and then spray paint the anvils black to try and hide a multitude of sins and to pass them off as better anvils than they are so watch out for this parctice. Sask Mark Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 According to Anvils in America, Black Prince anvils were made by Columbus Forge and Iron (makers of Trenton anvils) for the Shapleigh Hardware Company of St. Louis, Mo. Quote
Frank Turley Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 ...just so long as it's not the prince of darkness. Quote
anvilcustoms Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Are you going to buy it? If not, would you mind giving me information as to where it is at? I'd love to take a chance on it..... Quote
KAlexander Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 I'm buying it. He's a good friend on mine so I'm on the layaway plan. He said they only made a little over 300 of them. It was a little pricey for an anvil, but its a good one and not many out there. I've got my shop built and in the process of buying the euipment to fill it. For the last 3 years I've been goin by his shop in the winter and watching him and asking alot of questions. He's getting older so I figure I better buy some euipment from him while I can. He has probably 15 to 20 anvils, 10 to 15 forges, 20 to 25 post vises, 20 to 30 blowers, 4 trip hammers, hundreds of hammers and tongs. I am a self-employed steel draftsman that draws the structural framing on buildings with a computer program. I've been doin it for over 20 years. If anyone on here needs some blueprints made in AutoCAD I'd be more than happy to assist. I need tools, so maybe we could do some trading, if not, cash is always good. I can't do it for free, but I'll give anyone on this forum a 50% discount from my hourly rate. Quote
anvilcustoms Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Probably good that you bought it.....scarce anvil there....I had one. (see attached 701 pound Black Prince) Is he selling all his tools? If so, is he open to a visitor? Quote
