October 9, 201114 yr ok so i have a free day coming up on Monday and the weather is nice enough i can work out side so i went to my coal pile to bring some down to the shop only to find the cows had gotten into it during a power outage and they left me with a good bit of organic deposits and a good bit of urine in the coal having done a test fire with it it smells god offal for a while and then settles down anyone know of a good way to clean up half a tone of coal or is this just now what i would call hold your nose and turn the handle forging anyway never underestimate the destructive power of stupidity
October 9, 201114 yr LOL. I love Grant's idea. But you may better wait for rain or use the garden hose and give it a really good soaking. :)
October 9, 201114 yr I've seen YouTube videos of primitive forging on bolder anvils and rock hammers where the earth forge pit seems to be fueled by dried cow dung. I say, put a kerchief over yer nose and burn the stuff :D
October 9, 201114 yr Author yeah that sounds like a plan to bad it is under cover i guess its time to move the coal though the washing machine idea has a bit of an appeal to it just imagine the spin cycle i took 2 bushel baskets full and hosed them off so we will see how that goes
October 9, 201114 yr Author dodge for the most part its the urine burning that is just nasty you can taste it in the smoke
October 10, 201114 yr Author well at least it still makes fire all i have to say is if my work ends up having a yellow patina i am going to be pissed :P
October 10, 201114 yr A little ammonia never hurt nuthin'...my old tom cat used to leave me presents in the shop coal bins so I put a plywood lid on each of them. He quit catching mice after that so I guess it made him mad...
October 10, 201114 yr well at least it still makes fire all i have to say is if my work ends up having a yellow patina i am going to be pissed Pun is excused, you just about caused me to ruin a keyboard! I have had a similar experience with my coal but it wasnt the cows, it was cats. The only thing I can advise is to move your forge outside and try to have the forge down wind, at least thats what I did.
October 10, 201114 yr Author yeah i am starting a coal relocation posses still i am glad this provided a bit of amusement and yeah the idea of putting lids on the barrels i am moving it into is a good one thanks all
October 10, 201114 yr Washing a day's worth wouldn't be hard if it's fairly good sized a pain if it was all fines. Remember not to gas out your neighbors/parents/SO/etc---I so hate it when they show up at the smithy with the pitchforks and torches!
October 10, 201114 yr Author oddly i did a number on the roofers they were good sports about it unforchunalty this is mostly fine
