iGuitar93
I'm starting to learn blacksmithing and I am thinking about building a vertical railroad track anvil. It would be about 3ft tall and burried in a bucket of concrete. I was planning on welding a block of steel to the top of the rr track so I can have a larger working area. What type of steel would I need and what size should I look for? Also would I need to heat treat it. I will mainly be making knives and tomahawks. Thanks! pkrankow
If the end of the rail is larger than your hammer face, I would not add anything to it, it already is a good material to use as an anvil. I would still continue searching for a "proper" anvil and use what you have in the meantime. Phil
jeffro1205
what Phil said is right. that will be a good work surface. it may also help you with hammer control being that you have a small work area. not sure about the bucket of concrete, i have never used that as a base but wood is always good. good luck please post again and let us know how it turns out
