Aljeter
I was thinking about building a fire pot using an old plow disk for the bottom. Then cutting a 2 1/2 to 3 inch ring off a piece of pipe that will be welded around the disk.
ThomasPowers
I've seen them done that way; you will need a taller rim to get a nice tall fire in it though. For one forge I used to use for billet welding I made a sheetmetal "fence" that dropped right inside the rim (it was a smallish brake drum) and went up higher. I made it with a couple of inches of gap where the two ends would meet so I could push my pieces in and out and also cut a mousehole opposite the gap (and above the rim) so long pieces could go all the way through. Rob Browne
That almost describes my forge exactly and is a really common pattern in rural areas where discs are common. It would work a bit better if you cut a hole for a brake drum to deepen the fire and the rim around the edge needs to have a couple of cutouts for getting long stock down into the correct part of the fire.
